Be extra careful at intersections. Thats where many accidents happen due
to drivers trying to "beat the light."
If you have conventional brakes, dont slam the pedal. Pump your
brake pedal once or twice per second to help maintain steering control.
If you have anti-lock brakes, apply firm and continuous pressure on the
brake pedal.
Keep away from erratic drivers. One easy avoidance technique is to let
tailgaters pass you.
Always remember that there may be distracted drivers around you, talking to
passengers, playing with the radio or using a cellular phone. They may move suddenly and
not be aware of your presence.
Be alert around parked cars. Children could run out from behind one, someone
could open a car door, or a car could pull out in front of you.
When passing another car, get past the drivers blind spot (the left rear
corner of the car) as quickly and safely as possible.
Leave extra space between you and the car ahead of you in bad weather.
Headlights help you see and be seen at nighttime. Use headlights anytime
you cannot clearly see 1,000 feet in front of you.
Remember the basics: Use your seat belt, lock your car doors, limit loose
objects in the car, and remember your ABCs . . . Airbag safety; Buckle
everyone; Children in back.
